TWENTY-SIX

THEODORA BLACK

I’d returned to my office today, and only two hours had passed, and I already wanted to scream.

“Tuesday is a luncheon with the professional women’s group. Then there is a PTA meeting at seven,” Suzanne said, continuing to review next week’s calendar.

“Yeesh.” I rolled my eyes.

Suzanne paused to look at me.

“That was rude.” I frowned. “I apologize.”

The edges of her lips lifted. “You don’t hear me begging to go with you and take notes, do you?”

“I know I have to do these things every month.” I looked out the window at the rain falling in sheets.

“I can send your regrets,” my assistant offered.

“I have a duty to Novus.” I stretched my arms over my head. “Who knows? Maybe Edna Pierce will wear the same dress Marie Bohanon chose, and there will be a slap fest.”

Suzanne looked over at the desk my guards used when we were in my office. “Whatever would you do, Graham?”

“I’d lift the queen on my shoulders to make sure she has a clear view,” Graham said, amusement sparkling in his eyes.

“Thoughtfulness will be rewarded, especially if you can come up with a reason to pull me out of the PTA meeting.” I rolled my shoulders. Since The Lady had changed me, I was compelled to move more often. My days of being a lump on the sofa were over.

“We should plan something,” Suzanne said as if she sensed my need. “A night out, maybe?”

Suzanne had been integral to our victory over the powerful witch in Ohio. The Lady had sent her to me, and the connection had not broken. I was grateful, although I didn’t want to think about why I would need her in the future. “You know my calendar,” I teased.

“We should go dancing.” She pulled her phone from her back pocket. “You’ve been to The Club, right?”

I grinned. “Black and I had sex there for our first time.”

Graham gave us a loud, put-upon sigh. “Didn’t need to know that.”

“Oh, come on.” I made sure to grin at him. “Everybody wants to know the story of Black and Theo.”

“I know I do.” Suzanne couldn’t cover the giggle at the end of her statement.

“What night?” Graham asked. “Liv has never been, and she’s mentioned wanting to go.”

“I’m not sure it’s something Olivia would like,” Suzanne warned.

“She’s curious,” he told Suzanne.

“She was raised in a pack. Plus, I’m sure you’ve shared tales of your misbehavior.” I softened my words with a smile to Suzanne. “Nobody will force anybody into anything they don’t want to do.”

“Knox won’t be attending,” Graham said.

“I don’t know about that.” I shrugged. “There’s safety in numbers, and Zara might not want to miss out.”

“The Club is no place for a woman carrying a baby,” Graham told us. “Knox would be snarling at anybody that walked too close to his mate.

“You know that, and we know that.” I pointed to Suzanne and myself. “We can invite them, and Knox can refuse to bring Zara.”

“Let me make a few calls,” Graham held up his finger, asking for a moment.
